A strong and normal monsoon is of paramount importance to the Indian economy and it now appears to have picked up, despite an earlier weak phase. The monsoon is expected to see a revival over the East Central and North West part of the country. The outlook is for heavy to very heavy rains in the states of Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Konkan, Goa and Karnataka this week.
According to a prediction by the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts, a rain-generating Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO) wave will approach the Arabian Sea and Peninsular India from July 17, likely leading to a full-fledged revival of the monsoon. The MJO wave carries clouds and precipitation, and presides over the onset of monsoons and formation of low-pressure areas.
